As long as conscious thought has been a part of my earthly existence, I have been proud to be an American. My family was here from the earliest days of the creation of this country. In my family are two presidents, and one signer of the Declaration of Independence. My father was in the army, fighting in the Phillipine's and New Guinea during World War II.
Today? I saw the worst kind of lawlessness in our nation's capital. It was shocking to my soul. How could there be thugs of the worst kind breaking into our nation's capital? They broke windows, climbed walls, and made all types of threats, bombings, etc. One man was filmed in Nancy Pelosi's office, rummaging through her things, and putting his large boots up on her desk.
While this was happening, our president was virtually silent. When he finally did make a comment he called this mob, "Special people." He ended by saying, "We love you." I understand how a parent might love a wayward child. Unconditional love means even when you don't agree with another's actions, you will always love them. Our president was not loving a prodigal child. He was issuing love to lawless vandals, seditionists that were doing their best to disrupt the final affirmation of the electoral college votes. Sedition, is a very strong word. I do not use it lightly. Nonetheless, when you try to change a constitutional process with guns, and threats, that is a treasonous, or seditious act.
A similar dissension happened before in our country. In that case it became known as "The Civil War." Our country became so divided against itself that families were split up fighting against each other. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost.
Today? The Confederate flag was being flown WITH the flag of our country, The United States of America. I'm confused by that imagery. Have these people forgotten that if the Confederates had won, they would be in a different country altogether? They would not be flying the flag for The United States of America. They would ONLY fly the Confederate flag.
The president claimed to be a "Law and Order President." Today his claim was made false. One of the first lessons in Civics that I learned as a child was the phrase, "Your rights end where my nose begins." What does that mean? It means that you do not have the right to cause harm to anyone else. The only exception to this is self-defense. None of the mob today could have claimed self-defense. They came armed, and ready to swing into battle at the least provocation.
Honor, dignity, integrity, patriotism, and honesty, may be rather abstract ideas, but the actions of our countrymen at the capital in DC today showed none of these characteristics. They actually showed the opposite of these qualities. "A nation divided against itself cannot stand." These words were issued over one hundred years ago by Sam Houston. They are still true today.
Trump....stop dividing our nation by lying. Show a modicum of decency and accept your defeat. A new president is two weeks away. He is reasoned, intelligent, and not driven by the sheer desire to improve himself at the expense of others. I do realize that this is too much to expect from Donald J. Trump. So, for the rest of our country, let's hang on tight because these remaining weeks are promising a bumpy ride.
